The Science Behind Golf Swing Mechanics

It’s the same in most sports, amateurs and spectators watch pro athletes with amazement, wondering how in the heck do they do what they do. Do they have special skills or better understand the basics of the game to play so well? There’s no black magic in any of this, when it comes to most sports including golf the motions the players make in their perfect golf swing mechanics are all based on physics and science.

So how is it then that some golfers develop such an effortless golf swing? How do they send that ball 250 to 300 yards every single time. The answer lies in the science of it all, the mechanics of the golf swing is made up of just a few basic body movements that any of us can learn. But learning it correctly is what makes the difference between a fantastic and mediocre golf swing.

What mechanics of the Golf Swing Are Not

Let’s get this straight first, golf swing mechanics are not just strength in your arms. Of course a golfer uses his/her arms to swing the golf club, how ever it is not the force at which they swing their arms that sends that ball zooming away from the tee box. Instead it is the movement of their hips, and the transfer of their body weight forward through the mechanics of the swing that sends the ball flying.

The same way a punch is delivered in a boxing match, or a baseball bat is swung well when someone only uses the strength in their arms they’re leaving the weight of their body behind and not sending all the mass they can to hurl that ball down the fairway.

Technique, Not Strength

So what do we mean by putting your weight or body into your swing? We’re not suggesting that the correct swing technique is crushing the ball with strength. Rather we’re talking about body alignment when you approach the ball and proper technique to maximize the club head speed and strength when it connects with the ball. It’s natural for us to try and just muscle our way through a swing how ever for proper golf swing mechanics it becomes totally the opposite. So just what are the right mechanics of the golf swing.

The Body Mechanics That Make For Proper Delivery Are

The positioning of your elbow, hip and legs are the most important components in the swing delivery structure. The mechanics of the golf swing are that prior to swinging your elbows stay close to your body, and your weight should be residing mainly on your rear foot. When your come through with your down swing the weight shifts from your back to front foot and you turn through the swing with your hips. An important part of the golf swing is that you do not stop when you make contact with the ball, many do this and it causes their swing to come up short. Swing through the ball, this will ensure that the total torque generate from your hip motion is used in the swing. Practice and perfection of this will improve your golf swing mechanics and send that ball sailing.
