Golf Tips for Beginners

Some people disagree when I tell them that there are some golf tips for beginners that even many intermediate golfers haven’t mastered. It is possible to not learn the basics that most beginner golfers should learn and shoot a game in the nineties. We learn ways to make our driver go straight, chip correctly and even putt half decent within a ten foot range. How ever what lacks is consistency, I say this from personal experience. I didn’t learn the basics when I was a golf beginner and while I was able to hit a nice shot once and a while my consistency stunk.

Golf tips for beginners aren’t about how to hit your driver 250 yards off of every tee, or sink thirty foot putts. What it is about is how to master the basic skills so you have a solid foundation to build your technique on. Here’s the thing, there is no sense learning incorrect technique. Why? Because it takes longer to unlearn something that is incorrect then learn it correctly in the first place.

We’ll start simple, assuming you have some idea how to hold the club correctly and you’ve selected a grip that works for you, which club do you choose for a particular shot? So many people go to the driving range pull out their driver and hit one hundred consecutive balls all with their one wood. Doesn’t it seem silly when in all probability maybe 10% - 15% of your game is played using that club. What about the other 90%. That’s where this golf tip for beginners (although some more advanced players could use it) comes in.

Next time you’re at the driving range leave your driver in the bag. Take this beginner golf tip to hart and it will pay you back ten fold on the course. Pick a spot out in the range, maybe a fake flag or green it the key is make sure it’s close to a yardage marker so you know what distance away it is. Pick the club you think should get you there without struggling or swinging to hard. If you choose the incorrect one at first club up or down to compensate. Why are you doing this simple exercise, because you need a frame of reference to work with on the course.

Golf tips for beginners shouldn’t be about how to exactly pivot correctly though your swing, or transfer your weight let’s work on the basics (our video golf tips newsletter is full of beginner and intermediate tips). By determining what club brings you to that distance you’ve chosen you now know that for example your 7-iron travels 140 yards comfortably. So you can bet that your 8-iron probably sees about 125 yards, and your 6 iron 150-160. Now this will take a few trips to the range, but in time you’ll get a good feel for how far you can comfortably (the key here is comfortably) without struggling. Then when you’re faced with a shot on the course you’ll know what club to grab every time.

Practice and repetition make perfect in this game. Golf tips for beginners might not be exciting, but they pay off will be there in your game.

Once you’ve mastered your club lengths you should then move to the next golf tip which is golf tips on chipping. Having a good swing technique, combined with the right club distance will drop your score much faster then just learning how to hit a 250 yard drive all the time. So learning how to play well withing 100 yards of the green is a great way to cut strokes from your handicap.
